Mark Rats. PEOPLE, BOOKS, AND BIBLIOPHILY

The article addresses the development of bibliophily as a special object of thought. Bibliophily is presented as activity and is juxtaposed to traditional subjects in bibliophilic and bibliology literature as people and books. Books are a kind of “transformed forms”, products of thinking and activity. The methods, means, and forms of organizing bibliophily come to the forefront.

The three-volume “Museum of the Book” contains a panorama of the history and art of the Russian book, both manuscript and printed — from the Cyrillic incunabula to the early 20th century, illustrating authentic artefacts of exceptional cultural value. Among them are rare, often unique, books with provenance marks, marginalia, and autographs, including A.S. Pushkin, V.A. Zhukovsky, D.I. Mendeleev, and I.P. Kulibin, ephemera, graphic illustrations, and specimens of bindings. Each of the nearly five hundred entries is accompanied by a thorough annotation.

Elena Pirogova. "HIS FACTORIES ARE WELL-KNOWN... THE LIBRARY IS HUGE": AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION OF A NEW BOOK ON THE LIBRARY OF THE URAL 18TH CENTURY FACTORY OWNER, A.F. TURCHANINOV 

Detailed description of a new monograph dedicated to the largest private library of the Urals in the 18th century. This lost (or not yet identified) library, which belonged to the large factory owner A.F. Turchaninov, was reconstructed by the author on the basis of the 1789 Inventory of Property. The reconstruction determines the structure of the library, its size and cost, and its composition in terms of languages and fields of knowledge.

Olga Il’ina. BOOK ON THE LIBRARY OF ALFRED LUDWIG BOHM

A Czech-Russian edition published at Prague in 2021, the book here reviewed examines the personal library of the prominent philologist of the Russia Abroad, Alfred Ludwig Bohm, stored in the Slavic Library in Prague. The comprehensive catalogue of the library records the composition and features of his collection: the marginalia, and the texts of inscriptions, many published for the first time. Archival documents and literary works of Bohm are used to annotate the entries. The main purpose of the library was to recreate an academic environment in emigration. The book contains unpublished archival photographs, reproduction of covers, title pages, and inscriptions and is addressed to researchers of the Russia Abroad, philologists, book experts, and bibliophiles.

The article is devoted to the mathematician P.A. Bezsonov, a close friend of the artists K.K. Chebotarev and A.G. Platunova, who was a prototype of the protagonist of the novel by V.A. Kaverin, “In Front of a Mirror”. He also promoted the paintings of N.I. Feshin and was an excellent teacher at the leading universities of the USSR.

Devoted to the life and works of a great master of the silhouette, V.A. Svital’sky, he was a complicated individual who experienced many troubles during his short life. He worked in a classic manner and invented a unique “cut through silhouette”, which no one was able to achieve after his death. His silhouette drawings for the works of A.S. Pushkin moved him to the forefront of leading Soviet book graphic artists. The article contains drawings previously unpublished and a list of publications with his illustrations.

The publishing activity of the Club has improved the Russian book business in Israel. The article by the founder and permanent chairman of the JCB, book expert and publisher L. Yuniverg is based on his vast archive.
