Daria Moskovskaya. THE SORRENTO PRAVDA ON GORKY'S STAY IN ITALY

The article presents the book-album The Sorento Pravda, published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Maxim Gorky. It is a facsimile edition of the manuscript private journal of the writer’s family — a unique source of cultural and historical information about life and identity of the Russian post-revolutionary intelligentsia in emigration.

This publication is unique and undoubtedly will become a bibliophilic rarity. The colorful main section of the book is followed by auxiliary sections, modestly and concisely designed for thoughtful reading. They contain the texts of all issues of The Sorrento Pravda, including annotations explaining the sources of amusing stories and drawings in magazines, the article “Gorky in Sorrento” by M.A.Arias-Vihil, a research associate of the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IWL RAS), followed by unique photographs from The Memorial Museum of A.M.Gorky IWL RAS, and others.

Представляемая в статье книга «Без 15-ти век... Нас выбира­ют времена» известного библиофила и коллекционера Алексея Венгерова — первая часть трехтомника. Первая часть охватывает период со дня рождения автора до 1958 г. Существо проекта — представить общественное развитие через хронику основных со­бытий времени, собственные воспоминания, поданные в форме интервью, факсимиле газет и фотоколлажа изображений печат­ной продукции, характерной для эпохи. Новое издание повторяет энциклопедический формат «Библиохроники» Венгерова и от­личается теми же особенностями великолепного оформления: сериальное тиснение, глянцевая бумага, великолепная цветопере­дача иллюстраций. Новый замысел А. Венгерова рассматривается в статье как блестящий опыт книжного воплощения «Манифеста всех музеев» нобелевского лауреата Орхана Памука, призывавшего к созданию музеев «истории обычных людей».

Dar’ya Moskovskaya. ALEKSEI VENGEROV: "WE ARE CHOSEN BY THE TIMES". AN EXPERIMENT WITH "BIO-CHRONICLES" OF THE 20th CENTURY

The article introduces the book “Fifteen Years to a Century: We Are Chosen by the Times” by the famous bibliophile and collector Aleksei Vengerov. The first part of a three-volume work, volume one covers the period from the author’s birth to 1958. The project shows the development of society through the main events of the period, the author’s own recollections given in the form of interviews, facsimiles of newspapers, and a photomontage of printed materials of the given era. The work replicates the encyclopedic format of Vengerov’s “Bibliochronicles” and has the same beautiful design: serial embossing, glossy paper, and excellent color reproduction of illustrations. The article explores the Vengerov’s idea as the embodiment in the book of a “manifesto for museums” proposed by Orhan Pamuk, the Nobel laureate for literature, who urged for creation of museums depicting the history of ordinary people.
