Alexander Senkevich. REUNITING WITH THE PAST: ACROSS THE PAGES OF RENE GUERRA, "ARTISTS OF RUSSIA ABROAD IN THE BOOK ARTS: 1920-1970"

The monumental four-volume work of Rene Guerra, a French Slavist, is an encyclopedia containing concise biographies of talented Russian painters and graphic artists who after the October Revolution ended up outside the borders of Russia. For half a century they were engaged in book design and transformed the written texts into artistic symphony. Rene Guerra has been collecting items related to the creative work of artists of Russia Abroad. His connections with Russian artists were longstanding. The author documents 422 artists through 2,620 pages of his four-volume work with about 10,000 illustrations. These volumes together with other publications of Rene Guerra prove convincingly that the artists of Russia Abroad occupied a worthy place in the world book art.

The story of booklovers and bibliophilic events is presented on a high polygraphic level, the main emphasis being placed on photos and illustrations.

The article is devoted to the jubilee of the London-based journal The Book Collector, esteemed by bibliophiles all over the world. Special attention is paid to the founder of the journal, naval intelligence officer, journalist, and writer Ian Fleming. He is widely known as the author of novels on super-agent 007 James Bond, but few are aware that he was among the most brilliant bibliophiles of the 20th century. Over the years the journal has published much on the history of book and book collecting. Being deeply committed to the task of popularization of traditional book, the journal nowadays widely uses the opportunities provided by the latest digital technologies.

Irina Gogulina. "...DESERVES FULL ATTENTION AND IS OF UNIQUE VALUE" THE STROGANOV BOOK COLLECTIONS IN THE HERMITAGE ACADEMIC LIBRARY

The Stroganov family left an impressive mark in the Russian history and culture as patrons of the arts and owners of art collections well known in Russia and Europe. The article describes the Stroganov book collections and some interesting and rare copies. The main part of these collections arrived at The Hermitage after 1930. It was taken from the Stroganov Palace (St.-Petersburg) and is currently stored at the Hermitage Academic Library.

Nadezhda Serova. THE GIFT OF COUNT PAVEL STROGANOV TO THE LIBRARY OF THE IMPERIAL HERMITAGE

In 1880 Count Pavel Stroganov donated to the Imperial Hermitage a unique collection of auction catalogues, catalogues of private art collections, public museums, and exhibitions. The documents preserved in the archives of The State Hermitage helped to identify the books that once belonged to the well-known public figure, collector, and philanthropist.

Daria Moskovskaya. THE SORRENTO PRAVDA ON GORKY'S STAY IN ITALY

The article presents the book-album The Sorento Pravda, published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Maxim Gorky. It is a facsimile edition of the manuscript private journal of the writer’s family — a unique source of cultural and historical information about life and identity of the Russian post-revolutionary intelligentsia in emigration.

This publication is unique and undoubtedly will become a bibliophilic rarity. The colorful main section of the book is followed by auxiliary sections, modestly and concisely designed for thoughtful reading. They contain the texts of all issues of The Sorrento Pravda, including annotations explaining the sources of amusing stories and drawings in magazines, the article “Gorky in Sorrento” by M.A.Arias-Vihil, a research associate of the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IWL RAS), followed by unique photographs from The Memorial Museum of A.M.Gorky IWL RAS, and others.

Throughout his long career, he illustrated children’s and scientific literature, created posters, visuals, postcards, animal image stamps. The books with his illustrations are highly prized by bibliophiles. The author describes the artist’s biography and analyzes his art style. Attention is drawn to activities of Komarov in 1910-1920s, his fruitful cooperation with the I.D.Sytin and G.F.Mirimanov publishing houses.

Vasily Molodyakov. CHARLES MAURRAS AND HIS "CHEMIN DE PARADIS": GRAPHIC VOYAGE

The ancient manor Chemin de Paradis (Road to Paradise) in a Provenyal town of Martigues belonged to the famous French writer Charles Maurras (1868-1952) and repeatedly attracted the attention of artists. Taking the manor as his family’s legacy as well as the quintessence of his “small homeland”, Maurras filled the garden with historical relics and memorial signs, so it may be considered as one of his works of art. The manor is viewed through the works of French graphic artists Roger Joseph (1910-1996) and Tavy Notton (1912-1974) in their illustrated limited editions from the collection of the author of the article.
