Evgenii Nikitin. THE TRAGIC FATE OF THE PUBLISHER ZINOVII
GRZHEBIN
Describes the tragic fate of Z.I.Grzhebin (based on his
correspondence with Maxim Gorky). He began his publishing business with
satirical magazines “Bogey” and “Infernal
Mail”. Then, together with
S.Iu.Kopelman, he founded the publishing house “Shipovnik”. After the 1917
revolution, together with Gorky, Grzhebin organized the “Publishing house of
Zinovii Grzhebin”. Soviet bureaucrats obstructed the work of this publishing
house. Only V.I.Lenin, proceeding from his plans to expel Gorky from Russia, supported
the publishers. After the departure of Gorky and Grzhebin abroad in 1921, the
editions of Grzhebin’s publishing house were not allowed in Russia. Grzhebin
went broke. He died in poverty in 1929.
